Spenser Smith is a writer and wildlife photographer living in Nanaimo, B.C. From writing poems on the overdose crisis to photographing northern pygmy-owls on the mountainsides of Vancouver Island, he tells stories. His work appears in Poetry Is Dead, The Malahat Review, Prairie Fire, The Puritan, Contemporary Verse 2, and Maclean’s. He operates Birds and Bark, a wildlife photography business. He’s also the media and communications coordinator at Island Crisis Care Society, a non-profit that provides housing and support to people experiencing homelessness, substance use issues, and mental health issues. He holds a B.A. in creative writing and journalism from Vancouver Island University and is working toward an M.F.A. in creative writing at University of British Columbia.
