Spenser Smith is a writer and wildlife photographer living in Nanaimo, B.C. From writing poems on the overdose crisis to photographing northern pygmy-owls on the mountainsides of Vancouver Island, he tells stories. His work appears or is forthcoming in Maclean’s, The Malahat Review, Prairie Fire, The Puritan, and Contemporary Verse 2. He operates Birds and Bark, a wildlife photography business. He’s also the media and communications coordinator at Island Crisis Care Society, a non-profit that provides housing and support to people experiencing homelessness, substance use issues, and mental health issues. He holds a B.A. in creative writing and journalism from Vancouver Island University and is working toward an M.F.A. in creative writing at the University of British Columbia.
